Indulge in Revelry: The Bacchanalian Cocktail

Wed, Mar 27, 24  |  brandy cocktails

The Bacchanalian cocktail, named after the Roman god of wine, Bacchus, is a sophisticated and celebratory beverage. It combines the smooth richness of cognac with the fruity notes of red wine, creating a complex and satisfying drink. Perfect for after-dinner drinks or a festive occasion, the Bacchanalian is sure to impress.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ¾ ounces VS Cognac (or Brandy)
  • ¾ ounce Fruity Red Wine (Claret, Merlot, or similar)
  • ½ ounce Fresh Lemon Juice
  • ½ ounce Light Brown Sugar Syrup (recipe below)
  • Pinch of Freshly Grated Nutmeg (for garnish)

For the Light Brown Sugar Syrup:

  • ½ cup Water
  • ½ cup Light Brown Sugar

Instructions:

  1. Make the Light Brown Sugar Syrup (optional, but recommended): In a small saucepan, combine water and brown sugar over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely. Bring to a simmer, then remove from heat and let cool completely.

  2. Combine the ingredients: In a shaker filled with ice, add the cognac, red wine, lemon juice, and brown sugar syrup.

  3. Shake well: Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds to chill the drink and dilute the ingredients slightly.

  4. Strain and serve: Strain the cocktail into a chilled red wine glass filled with fresh ice.

  5. Garnish: Sprinkle a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg over the top for a touch of warmth and aroma.

Tips:

  • Fresh is Best: Use freshly squeezed lemon juice for the brightest flavor.

  • Sugar Swap: If you don't have brown sugar syrup, you can substitute simple syrup (equal parts water and sugar) or adjust the sweetness to your preference by adding a touch of honey or agave nectar.

  • Fruity Options: While Claret or Merlot are classic choices, feel free to experiment with other fruity red wines like Pinot Noir or Gamay. Just ensure the wine complements the cognac's flavor profile.

  • Spirit Selection: VS (Very Special) cognac is a good starting point, but you can also use VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale) or XO (Extra Old) cognac for a richer and more complex taste.

With its rich flavors and historical inspiration, the Bacchanalian cocktail is a perfect choice for any occasion that calls for a touch of elegance and celebratory spirit. So raise a glass, savor the complex flavors, and let the revelry begin!
