Brandy Crusta: A Jewel-Toned Classic Cocktail

Tue, Apr 23, 24  |  brandy cocktails

The Brandy Crusta is a sophisticated pre-Prohibition era cocktail known for its stunning presentation and delightful citrusy flavor.  A sugared rim adds a touch of sweetness and textural contrast, while the cognac and citrus juices create a perfectly balanced boozy delight.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ oz Brandy (cognac is preferred)
  • ¼ oz Orange curaçao (like Cointreau)
  • ½ oz Simple syrup
  • ¾ oz Fresh lemon juice
  • 1 bar spoon Maraschino liqueur (Luxardo is a good brand)
  • 7 drops Angostura bitters
  • Sugar for rimming the glass
  • Lemon twist for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Dip the rim of a chilled coupe glass in water or lemon juice. Then, carefully roll the rim in a plate of sugar to create a thick sugar crust.
  2. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add the brandy, orange curaçao, simple syrup, lemon juice, maraschino liqueur, and Angostura bitters.
  3. Shake well for about 15 seconds until chilled. Strain the drink into your prepared coupe glass.
  4. Add a lemon twist for garnish and enjoy your Brandy Crusta!

Tips:

  • If you don't have orange curaçao, you can substitute with another orange liqueur or even a splash of orange juice.
  • You can adjust the amount of simple syrup to your taste preference.
  • For a more pronounced citrus flavor, use a lemon peel for garnish instead of a twist.
  • The sugar rim can be messy, so be prepared for some drips! But it's part of the charm of this classic drink.
