Unleash the Smoke: The Oaxacan Margarita

Thu, Mar 28, 24  |  mezcal cocktails

The Margarita, that ubiquitous symbol of refreshment, gets a smoky makeover with this Oaxacan twist.  This recipe swaps the usual tequila for mezcal, the Mexican spirit known for its distinctive smoky flavor.  The result is a complex and intriguing cocktail that will tantalize your taste buds.

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces Mezcal (preferably Espadin for a lighter smoke, or Tobalá for a more pronounced smoke)
  • 1 ounce Fresh Lime Juice
  • 1/2 ounce Agave Nectar
  • Black Salt (for rimming the glass)
  • Dehydrated Orange Wheel (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Prep the glass:  Run a lime wedge around the rim of a rocks glass. Dip the rim in black salt to create a smoky and salty border.

  2. Combine liquids: In a cocktail shaker filled with ice,  add mezcal, lime juice, and agave nectar.

  3. Shake it up: Shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds until well chilled and slightly frothy.

  4. Strain and serve: Strain the margarita into the prepared rocks glass filled with fresh ice.

  5. Garnish time: Add a touch of elegance with a dehydrated orange wheel.

Tips:

  • Freshness is key! Use the freshest limes you can find for the brightest flavor.
  • Agave nectar adds a touch of sweetness without overpowering the smoky mezcal. Adjust the amount to your taste preference.
  • Experiment with different types of mezcal to discover your favorite smoke profile.
  • If you don't have dehydrated orange wheels, a lime wedge works too!
  • Feeling spicy? Add a thin jalapeno slice to the shaker for a kick (remove before serving).

Embrace the Smoke!

The Oaxacan Margarita is a delightful departure from the classic recipe. The smokiness of the mezcal mingles beautifully with the tart lime juice and sweetness of the agave nectar, creating a truly unique and unforgettable cocktail experience. So, raise a glass and embrace the smoky magic of Oaxaca!
