The Smoky Manhattan: A Tequila Twist on a Classic

Fri, Mar 22, 24  |  tequila cocktails

The Manhattan, a sophisticated blend of whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters, is a timeless cocktail. But for those seeking a smoky and intriguing twist, the Tequila Manhattan offers a delightful alternative. This recipe swaps whiskey for tequila, creating a unique play on familiar flavors.

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces reposado tequila (aged tequila with a smooth taste)
  • 1 ounce sweet vermouth (such as Carpano Antica Formula)
  • ½ ounce smoked paprika-infused simple syrup (recipe below)
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Garnish: orange twist or cherry (optional)
Smoked Paprika Simple Syrup (optional):
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika

Instructions:

  1. Make the smoked paprika simple syrup (optional): In a saucepan, combine water, sugar, and smoked paprika. Heat over low heat, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and let steep for 30 minutes to infuse the smoke flavor. Strain through a cheesecloth or fine-mesh sieve to remove the paprika flakes. Discard the solids and store the syrup in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to a month.

  2. Chill your glass:  Place your coupe or rocks glass in the freezer for 15-20 minutes. This ensures your drink stays refreshingly cold.

  3. Combine the spirits: Add the tequila, sweet vermouth, and Angostura bitters to a mixing glass filled with ice.

  4. Stir it up:  Gently stir the mixture with a bar spoon for about 30 seconds, until well chilled and slightly diluted.

  5. Strain and serve:  Strain the cocktail into your chilled glass.

  6. Sweetener (optional):  If you didn't make the smoked paprika simple syrup, add a bar spoon of regular simple syrup or maple syrup to taste.

  7. Garnish (optional): Express the oils from an orange twist by twisting it over the drink and then dropping it in the glass, or add a maraschino cherry for a classic touch.

Tips:

  • Tequila Selection: Reposado tequila, aged for a minimum of two months, offers a smoother flavor profile that complements the other ingredients. However, you can also experiment with silver tequila (blanco) for a brighter agave taste.

  • Smoky Variations: Mesquite-smoked tequila can add an extra layer of smokiness to the drink.

  • Vermouth Matters: Sweet vermouth adds sweetness and complexity. Experiment with different brands to find your favorite flavor profile.

  • Sweetness to your taste: The smoked paprika simple syrup adds a subtle smoky note and a touch of sweetness. Adjust the amount or use regular simple syrup/maple syrup to your preference.

Embrace the smoky intrigue of the Tequila Manhattan. It's a perfect choice for adventurous cocktail enthusiasts who appreciate a unique twist on a timeless classic.
